Gas Street Basin

An accompanying print to Mailbox Cubed. There are certain themes or sets within the series that I need to consider as a discrete group as well as part of the 100 views series. What I mean is that the canal system around Birmingham is one of the most defining elements of the city. The prints that depict the canals would make a good separate exhibition. So I need to think of them as a set and take into consideration a range of locations, times of the day, weather conditions and specific canal subjects such as particularly iconic boats or moorings etc. Gas Street Basin has a type of light that I encounter quite a lot. It is a little bit overcast, taking out the vibrancy of colours that can be seen on a sunny day for example. It is a bit drab really, perhaps reminiscent of the light in Lowry’s paintings. The sky in this print was built up using quite a lot of layers as was the reflections in the water. This gives it an opaque quality which I feel is an attribute of this particular light. I could make small adjustments to this print ad infinitum, but there comes a time when you have to put it to one side and move on.
