The Rotunda

£22.00£40.00

The Rotunda:  it’s just a simple cylinder but somehow it is so much more.
I’m not a born and bred Brummie. My first memories of Birmingham are using Digbeth coach station as I travelled down from the frozen north to the gentle hills of Hampshire and more specifically, Winchester School of Art. Looking up at the Rotunda in the late 1980s, on a brief stopover between coach trips, I noticed a rather rude phrase displayed in the Rotunda’s windows (one letter per window). It was quite amusing and made more so by the fact that you had to partially walk around the building to gain the full meaning. I’m surprised that in subsequent years that it hasn’t become a hashtag.
I think this part of Birmingham is often colder than other parts of the city. I wanted the view to look wet, cold, and busy with shoppers. I’m pleased with how the reflections turned out in this print. As you build up layers in printmaking you begin to make something that you have a feeling is unrepeatable – not a good feeling when you are making editions.

I do have some of the original prints left from this view, priced at £150. This listing is for the open edition, signed giclée. If you are interested in the original please contact me directly and I will send photos of the original print that I have available.
