Ramgarhia Sikh Temple
Amidst the Victorian architecture of the JQ sits this former Wesleyan chapel turned Sikh temple. The strong blue lends a celebratory atmosphere to what is otherwise a neighbourhood in greige (but still with much beauty). This was my first inclusion of the Library in one of the views. I have spent many hours carving those unforgiving filigrees. Despite the bright colours of the temple and the orange flagpole, the print somehow has that grey, milky light where no shadows can ever exist. Initially, I was attracted to this view because of the strange shifts in scale that you experience when you view it. There is a peculiar toy town dizzying phenomenon when you stand on Vittoria Street and look at the Sikh Temple. I think this is caused by the three layers of depicted cityscape becoming progressively larger as they recede: the terraced street in the foreground, the larger temple in the middle ground and the landmark library building furthest away.
One year I hope to catch the Vaisakhi parade. I am particularly taken by the barefoot, sword wielders and the teams of sweepers that walk before them.
Prints can take up to two weeks to come but I aim to be much quicker.
I have a small number of these left as original prints.
