Old Joe Through the Great Hall Window

Price range: £22.00 through £40.00

Old Joe Through the Great Hall Window
A different view of Old Joe: fragmented by the small square windows of a large arched window in the Great Hall.  Inside the Great Hall is well worth a visit. It is a beautiful centrepiece for the University of Birmingham. This view is from the first floor, with the reception desk out of view below. Originally I intended to create this as a vertical dyptych with the reception desk and main doors visible in the print that would fit below. Running out of remaining views I realised that it was not going to happen in the 10 or 15 views that I have left to complete the series.

The art teacher in me was a little inspired by Robert Delaunay’s fragmented view of the Eiffel Tower. I heard the story that looking at the Eiffel Tower from his hospital bed (when he was recovering from illness) gave him vertigo. In his fragmented view he tried to recreate that feeling of vertigo. Old Joe through Great Hall Window really reminded me of this painting and I very much had it in mind when I was making it.
