St Philip’s Fox

The thing that has really puzzled me about this print in the four years since I made it is where on earth does the apostrophe go in the title? Does it depend upon whether the fox belongs to the church or will that forever be ambiguous?

The view is looking back at St Philip’s from The Old Joint Stock (more on that place later). The gravestone in the foreground is Samuel Lines’ who lived next door to the OJS according to the blue plaque – very handy.

I decided when I created this print that I would begin with lots of beetroot pink and take it from there. I looked back at the other views completed so far and felt that the colours were settling into a rut and needed challenging. The fox is placed into the print using a tricky printmaking method called chine colle – essentially a tissue paper collage printed and glued as it goes through the press. This did lead to lots of swearing as it happens at the end and it is easy to mess up. It is also the third print that I created around St Philip’s. St Philips, Pigeon Park and the buildings on the surrounding square are in quite a large number of the views.

I do have some of the original prints left from this view, priced at £150. This listing is for the open edition, signed giclée. If you are interested in the original please contact me directly and I will send photos of the original print that I have available.
